Key points

  • Liga F is the top division of Spanish women's football: 16 clubs and 30 matchdays.
  • It has been a professional competition since 2022-23, the first season under the Liga F name.
  • The top three play in the Women's Champions League and the bottom two drop to Primera Federación.

What Liga F is

Liga F (branded Liga F Moeve) is the top tier of women's football in Spain. It is run by the Liga Profesional de Fútbol Femenino, a body made up of the clubs themselves, just as LaLiga is in the men's game.

Sixteen clubs play home and away, which makes 30 matchdays, usually from September to May. As in other leagues, a win is worth three points and a draw one. Follow the live table in the Liga F standings.

From Primera Iberdrola to a professional league

In June 2021 Spain's National Sports Council approved making the women's top flight professional, something players and clubs had demanded for years. The professional league then had to be set up and its rules agreed, so the first season as a professional competition, and under the Liga F name, was 2022-23.

Being a professional league means, among other things, that the competition manages its own broadcasting and commercial rights and that participating clubs must meet minimum financial requirements.

Allocation in recent seasons; the number of European places depends on Spain's UEFA coefficient.

The top three qualify for the Women's Champions League, although not all enter at the same stage: the number of places and the round of entry depend on Spain's UEFA coefficient. The bottom two are relegated to Primera Federación and replaced by two clubs promoted from that division.

The leading clubs

FC Barcelona have dominated the competition over the last decade and have also won several Champions League titles. Behind them are Real Madrid, who started their women's section in 2020 by taking over CD Tacón, and Atlético de Madrid. Other clubs with a long history in the division include Levante, Athletic Club and Real Sociedad.

What about the Copa de la Reina?
